Digital illustrations and animations related to HNRNPH2 genetic mutation
SUMMARY
A series of hand-drawn digital animations titled after my daughter, Violet, and her rare genetic condition. This is an ongoing work in progress.
CREATIVE PROCESS
The genesis of the Violet’s Garden collection, The Double Helix portrays the beginning of Violet’s rare genetic condition. The double helix is the basis for life. Both plants and animals share the same structure of the double helix, showing the interconnectedness of nature. Our DNA can impact the way that we look, but also the way that we function. There are times when mutations occur, leading to variations in DNA that can impact an individual in various ways. Thanks to science, many genetic conditions have been discovered that are caused by these mutations. This piece aims to highlight some of the diversity that unique genetic code causes, from the appearance of flowers to the function of bees as workers, drones, or queens.

The second illustration in this series is a work in progress - Coxa Valga - and highlights the impact of the hip deformity that Violet has, causing issues with mobility. Violet is non-ambulatory, which means she is unable to weight bear independently, or walk. For Violet, this is a condition that has warranted surgery which she will be undergoing in late 2023.
Once again, my choice of employing scientific illustration as a medium is rooted in my enduring fascination with the interplay between science and art. The deliberate utilisation of a monochromatic color palette serves a dual purpose. It not only harmonises the various elements within the illustrations but also symbolizes the existence of numerous individuals with hidden disabilities in our society, who often remain overlooked or forgotten.
