Frankenstein: Classic Reboot

A redesigned pack for Mary W. Shelley's classic novel

SUMMARY

A reboot of a classic - Mary W. Shelley's Frankenstein, with an excerpt, dissolving picture frame and lenticular poster. Frankenstein is classed as Gothic literature, and the use of dark imagery that highlights the supernatural is abundant throughout it.

CREATIVE PROCESS & RATIONALE

The overarching theme of the pack is scientific exploration in its beauty and ugliness. Images of bacteria and mould were used to portray the beauty in the ugly parts of nature and science. Frankenstein’s scientific experiment in the form of the monster created something he considered so hideous, that he was unable to even look at it. However, within this experiment were the possibilities of scientific breakthroughs, much like the way that bacteria in a petri dish have the potential to inform us of and create antibiotics.

In a darker environment, a light shone on the concertina shadow poster creates shadows based on the typographical elements. This depicts the ‘gloomy’ setting of the novel, and its simplicity on black paper stock is used to contrast against the detailed imagery in the rest of the pack. The main settings in the novel are described as the Swiss mountains, therefore the use of the bacteria to create landscape-like imagery was intentional.

The dissolving picture frame uses a backdrop of mould and bacteria close-ups with two quotes from the perspective of the monster and Dr. Frankenstein respectively. This, again, shows two perspectives that can be toggled between using the pull-out tab. This particular style has been used to indicate that Dr Frankenstein and the monster are two sides of the same coin, and far more similar, particularly with their reclusion and need for love. Their words and their worlds are intertwined and cut into each other causing emotive reactions from and therefore consequences for both characters.
