Superficial Intelligence

A publication on the topic of machine learning

SUMMARY

This was a publication design project that utilised existing texts on the topic of Artificial Intelligence.

CREATIVE PROCESS & RATIONALE

The purpose of this publication is to educate the audience about the way that AI can impact the creator economy, the opportunities and challenges associated with AI-generated art and design, the current viewpoints of AI amongst creatives, and ways in which machine learning can merge two fields: software engineering and art/design, to produce unique results for clients. The style direction 'glitched and distorted' was used, with a heavy emphasis on using software such as Processing script to glitch imagery and create visually exciting graphics to engage the reader. Glitch art is often presented as a disruption to the status quo, which is something that Artificial Intelligence is doing to not just the creative industries, but society in general. When we think of code, we think it needs to be perfect to execute a function, but in this case, it can actually create something beautiful and unique despite being 'imperfect'. The publication highlights the opportunities and challenges that AI may present to creatives and one of those challenges is the expectation of perfection in a fluid, emotion-powered field such as art. When we think of glitches in computer systems, we think of disruption, corruption and anomalies. These are all issues that can be closely linked to the way that AI can transform our world. Exploring imagery that is intentionally glitched and distorted is relevant to the theme as it's tech-inspired and indicates a rebellious nature that illustrates the imperfections of technology and how it can impact how we perceive the world.
